Virginia Megan's Law
Named after Megan Kanka, Megan's Law was passed into federal law in 1995. Megans Law demands that each state
develop a procedure for notifying the public when a sexual offender is relocated into their neighborhood.
Megan was only seven years old when a repeat sex offender that lived accross the street from her family, abducted,
violently rapped, and murdered her. It was decided that if her family or other residents in the communtiy had been alerted that a repeated
sexual predator was housed in their community, this heinous act could've been avoided. With that in mind, the U.S. Congress
legislated the "Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994", aka Megan's Law, without any protests.
Ever since the law was passed, Virginia has strived to protect its citizens the most up to date information
regarding previous sex offenders and their current residency. The bill has proven that while sexual assaults are still a
problem in the United States, acts committed by prior offenders are on a decline.
The data obtainable by the passing of Megan's Law has continued to be a major benefit in keeping one's family
guarded from the dangers of sexual misconduct. Staying updated on information that is related to you an your household is a must. virginiasexoffenderlist.org is
